CHOICE is the public face of the Australian Consumers’ Association. With over 200,000 members, CHOICE is Australia’s leading publisher of consumer information, product reviews and provides proactive consumer advocacy. Consumers told CHOICE they are fed up with the deal from supermarkets in terms of value, choice and trust. There was a cacophony of personal anecdotes and local complaints about the major supermarkets practices but no clear key issues. CHOICE needed to find a cost effective way to define and prioritise unfair retail practices and enable change.
UNO developed an interactive website, Checkout choice, as the centrepiece of building a grassroots campaign. Checkout choice gives consumers access to knowledge, articles and exposés of supermarket practices and a voice for whistle blowers and local community groups. Polls, forums and feedback helps CHOICE determine what the main issues really are. The site has the tools and tips to empower and enable consumer action. Together, CHOICE and consumers can bring about real fairness, transparency and change.
Using Checkout choice, consumers are now sharing their experiences of supermarkets and can take action such as collecting and sharing prices. The site enables CHOICE to conduct broad research and investigation. This is helping CHOICE to refer matters to regulators where there is a breach of the law and further their call for the establishment of a Supermarket Ombudsman.
